While in school, Lenny worked in a number of restaurants and purchased his first restaurant, The Naropa Cafe, in 1992. At the cafe, Lenny deepened his knowledge of cooking, and his lifelong appreciation of the ethnic cuisine of other cultures was sparked. In 1998, Lenny and Sara were selected to operate the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse, a gift to the city of Boulder from their sister city, Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The ornate, handcrafted Teahouse is the largest teahouse in the US, and is one-of-a-kind in the western hemisphere.

The Topchans are traditional raised platform seating options that are often seen in Tajikistan. Our guests often request the Topchans when making a reservation. The ceiling of the Teahouse was carved and painted with intricate patterns traditional of Persian Art. The teahouse ceiling was originally built, carved and painted in Tajikistan. Absolutely no power tools were used in the original construction.

Always hoping to honor and highlight the creative and historic culture of Tajikistan and the Persian Empire, the Teahouse displays some traditional clothing, artifacts, and photos. From November to late January, 275,000 lights illuminate Boulder’s Central Park in front of the teahouse. Because this is a municipal building, it is open to the public, so you may pop in to admire the building without dining here. Local Boulder architect Vern Seieroe traveled to Dushanbe and collaborated with teahouse architect Lado Shanidze to enclose the originally open-air structure while still preserving the integrity of the Tajik design. And in 1990, the teahouse was disassembled, packed into 200 shipping containers and sent on the long journey by train, ship and tractor trailer to Boulder. These services require a 24 hour minimum advanced reservation, with both dietary restrictions and credit card information to be confirmed. These services are seated on a first-come, first-served basis.

The work was crafted by hand exactly as it was centuries ago. Inside the Teahouse, there are 12 intricately carved cedar columns. Don't even ask), and the production design details. Robby Rackleff plays the family's patriarch and he is particularly effective in building the overall tension of the piece. His role couldn't be more crucial, and he meets the moment with a fierce intensity that really forces the audience to become intimately familiar with the terror this family is facing. The host of The Sculptor's Clayground at one point had Lynks disease, but was able to overcome it.

This area provides easy access to DTLA and Hollywood and surrounding neighborhoods like Echo Park and Angelino Heights, which is great for commuting and checking out the latest in these areas. This LA neighborhood is famous for offering views of the Verdugo Mountains and beautiful parks like Brand Park and, of course, Griffith Park on its border.

This home feels the most private in the sense that all of the other homes on the list are easily visible from the street and sidewalk. In this case, you do have to walk to the gate in order to see the house. At least, that’s what This House Has People In It has to say.

I have visited the house for free on two different occasions. You can visit it for free on the Museums of the Arroyo Day or during the City of Pasadena’s ArtNight. When they were looking through the records they found that when George was here in Philadelphia in 1774 for the First Continental Congress he paid Betsy and John Ross--her first husband--to make bed curtains for Mount Vernon. How did George Washington choose this random upholstery lady in Philadelphia for the flag?

I had the privilege of interviewing Lisa and got to talk a little bit about the museum, her career, and her favorite parts of Betsy Ross’s story.

He died shortly after, in 1775, when rumors state that a gunpowder explosion killed him. Betsy was only 24 years old when she was widowed and continued to work in the upholstery business, making blankets, tents, and packaged ammunition in 1779 for the Continental Army. She married a couple of times after and had a handful of children who mourned her death in January of 1836. Whether or not she lived at the Betsy Ross house is a matter of debate, but it remains one of the most visited (and most haunted) sites in the city of Philadelphia. The historic residence includes a gallery exhibit, "Stitching the Story Together," that explores the life of Betsy Ross and the request that made her one of the most well-known women in American history. Visitors can also meet a historic impersonator of Betsy Ross ask her questions about her fascinating life as she works in her upholstery shop.

This free, all-ages series features professional storytellers sharing fun and interactive tales about Betsy — among other prominent 18th-century women.
